Rep. Sean Casten's 17-year-old daughter Gwen dies
CBS Chicago says that Illinois Congressman Sean Casten said Monday night that his 17-year-old daughter Gwen had died.
"During this heartbreaking time, the Casten family has asked for privacy, and we will have no more to say," Casten's office said in an email.
Shortly before Casten's congressional office told him that his daughter had died, Casten's campaign asked all Illinois TV stations to pull his campaign ads off the air until further notice.
Casten, a 50-year-old Democrat from Downers Grove, is running for his third term in Congress in the new 6th District.
which he has been representing since 2018, when he beat the Republican incumbent, Peter Roskam.
Casten is running against Rep. Marie Newman, who has been in office for only a year, and Charles Hughes, who works at Nicor.
The loss of their daughter is a terrible tragedy for the Casten family. "Sean, Kara, and the whole Casten family are in my thoughts and prayers," Newman said in a statement.
Newman decided to oppose Casten in 2022 after a congressional remap put her in Rep. Jesus "Chuy" Garcia's mainly Hispanic 3rd District.
Hughes ran against Newman in 2020 in Illinois' 3rd Congressional District but finished fourth with 2.3% of the vote.
